Juicero shuts down and offers customers refund

Silicon Valley startup Juicero has decided to call it a day and shutter the business.

For those that aren’t aware of what Juicero offered, it sold a cold-press juicer that squeezed bags of fruit and juice. The bags were really “cheap” at $5 – $8 (R64 – R103) but the juicer itself cost $400 (~R5 100) after being discounted from $700.

While the price was quite high that wasn’t the only thing that Juicero had to struggle against. Earlier this year Bloomberg discovered that you could recreate the functionality of the press with your hands.

The backlash from customers was rather severe and the firm decided to offer customers refunds. That was not enough however and in July the firm decided to drop the price of the juicer to below the $200 mark and shift the firm’s resources.

“During this process, it became clear that creating an effective manufacturing and distribution system for a nationwide customer base requires infrastructure that we cannot achieve on our own as a standalone business,” the firm said in a statement.

So now Juicero is shutting its doors. Customers can now get a refund on their purchase of the press so long as they contact the firm before 1st December.
