PewDiePie drops racist slur in livestream, indie dev lashes out

Oh, PewDiePie. What the hell is going on with you?

Just over six months after the biggest YouTuber on the planet received a pounding in the press for an ill thought out anti-semitic joke, Felix Kjellberg is in trouble again, this time for dropping a racist slur on a livestream.

While playing a round of PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, PewDiePie seemingly became frustrated with being unable to hit an opponent and dropped the N-word in a brief torrent of abuse aimed at the player. We’re not going to embed the video here, but if you want to watch it, it’s currently up on Oddshot. If you decide to watch it, it goes without saying that it is definitely NSFW.

Kjellberg then laughs the whole thing off, saying he “didn’t mean that in a bad way”, but there’s a hell of a lot of blunt the nastiness in that clip. The word ‘inappropriate’ doesn’t really begin to cover it.

Naturally, social media has been buzzing ever since news of the clip got out. A lot of Kjellberg’s fans have rushed to his defence, but there’s a pretty large backlash in progress too. Firewatch developer, Sean Vanaman says that Campo Santo has hit PewDiePie with a DMCA takedown of its game – and all future games the developer makes going forward.

Vanaman went on to call PewDiePie a purveyor of “despicable garbage that does real damage to the culture around this industry.”

It’s unclear whether anymore developers or publishers will follow suit. PewDiePie, for his part, has been rather silent since this all blew up, but if past behaviour is anything to go by, we should see a video dismissing the whole thing as a joke in the next couple of days.
