Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus: a shutterbug’s dream

You have to feel for Tim Cook. By the time he strolled on stage at the newly opened Steve Jobs Theater (sic) pretty much every single product in his presentation deck had already been leaked.

That, however, didn’t dampen the enthusiasm in the audience in attendance, who greeted the reveal of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus smartphones with audible whoops and cheers.

Tagged as “the new generation of iPhone” the handsets look rather similar in appearance to the iPhone 7 and 7 plus, but boast an A11 Bionic processor, which Apple describes as the most “powerful chip ever in a smartphone”.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch Retina HD displays respectively covered in the most durable glass on an iPhone to date. The handset boasts dual 12MP cameras on the back.

The cameras, incidentally, hogged some of the focus of the presentation. Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller, went into some depth about its larger and faster sensor, a new colour filter and deeper pixels. Shutterbugs will also be delighted to hear that the iPhone 8 has True Tone colour adjustment and a Portrait Mode, which offers lighting effects and clarity so you can fake it like a pro.  The cameras are also fine-tuned for AR, calibrated with accelerometers and gyroscopes for motion tracking.

On top of that, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus both have wireless charging capability, so you won’t have to worry about a tangle of cables in your car or by your bedside table. The device is water and dust resistant to boot.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus ship on 22nd September and prices start at $699. At the time of writing there’s no word on a South African release date or market price. We’re betting though, it’ll cost the same as the down payment on a small car. We’d love to be proved wrong.
