Eskom delays bulk loadshedding in indebted municipalities

Three municipalities in the Eastern Cape will be able to keep their lights on for longer as Eskom has postponed scheduled loadshedding due to debt owed to it.

The power utility had planned the pending interruptions of bulk electricity at Raymond Mhlaba, Walter Sisulu and Inxuba Yethemba Municipalities for today.

However, the interruptions have been rescheduled for Friday and the municipalities have been given extra time to make a payment arrangement.

“We are still hopeful that we will be able to find mutually acceptable solutions before Friday, 15th September. We firmly believe that the interruption of supply to any customer for non-payment is always the option of last resort and we will continue to engage the municipalities over the next two days in an attempt to avert the supply interruptions,” Eskom said.

According to a report from the Office of the Presidency, 58 municipalities owe Eskom a massive R7.5 billion in total.
