J.J. Abrams returns to write and direct Star Wars Episode IX

Lucasfilm has announced that J.J. Abrams has been tapped up to write and direct Star Wars Episode IX.

Abrams will co-write the screenplay with Chris Terrio (who wrote Argo, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Justice League) and helm the production that rounds off the trilogy he started two years ago, according to a post on the official Star Wars blog.

Abrams will replace Colin Treverrow who was fired as the Episode IX’s director last week, reportedly because he clashed with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy over the direction the movie should head in.

Trevorrow, incidentally, isn’t the first Star Wars director to be shown the door over creative differences; Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were dismissed from the production of the planned origin story of Han Solo, back in June of this year.

In the wake of Treverrow’s departure, it’s likely Lucasfilm wanted a safe pair of hands for the final instalment in the current Star Wars trilogy and they don’t come much safer than JJ Abrams. His first crack at the bat was Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, which raked in over $2 billion in box office receipts and was a critical smash to boot.

“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” Kennedy, who is also handling producer duties, was quoted as saying.

The arrival of J.J. Abrams is good news, then, for both Lucasfilm and Star Wars fans, but it also means that Episode IX’s release date has been pushed. Originally slated for release in May of 2019, it’s now set to hit cinemas in December of 2019.
