Taxify vehicles attacked in Pretoria

The violence aimed at Uber drivers has spread to contractors working for other ride-sharing apps it seems, after two Taxify vehicles were torched in Pretoria yesterday.

Gauteng police told News24 that both vehicles were attacked in Sunnyside within hours of each other.

Police spokesperson Daniel Mavimbela told News24 that the first vehicle was set on fire by a group of eight men who threatened the driver with violence while he was waiting to pick up a client. The group then poured what has been described as a ‘flammable liquid’ on the car and set it alight. Fortunately the driver escaped unscathed.

The second incident occurred in the same area later in the afternoon. Mavimbela says that a group of seven men approach a Taxify vehicle and torched it. The driver escaped with no injuries.

Mavimbela said police are investigating two cases of malicious damage to property and the first driver has opened a case of assault.

This is the second incident of violence aimed at drivers who work for ride-sharing app companies this week, after Uber drivers and metered taxi drivers clashed outside the Gauteng Station in Hatfield. One car was damaged and several windshields were smashed in that incident.

These attacks come just one week after violence between metered taxi drivers and Uber drivers outside the Gauteng Station in Sandton last week resulted in three vehicles getting torched.

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi has warned both Uber and metered taxi drivers that the government will not tolerate lawlessness. We’re assuming this warning extends to Taxify drivers too.
