Uber Movement includes Gauteng

Back in January, Uber announced an initiative that could turn out to be a valuable asset for city planners.

The project is called Movement and it’s essentially a massive collection of all the data Uber has collected over the last six-and-a-half years from app users in various cities.

At the time it was announced, Uber Movement was a relatively small resource – it only had four cities in its database. Since then, though, it’s grown in leaps and bounds and now Gauteng has been added.

The data is available to anyone who has an Uber account – you’ll need to login if you want to check it out. Fire up the site and you can use it to plan trips and check out real-time travel times. Its main thrust though is to help city planners to ease congestion in urban conurbations.

Uber says that Movement was designed to be a largely collaborative effort; it’s a work in progress that relies not only on the company’s data gathering, but also input from users and feedback. Uber also has announced it’s willing to work with other local data gatherers in order to optimising Movement’s potential as a city planning tool.

Cape Town, Durban and PE have yet to be added to Movement, but Uber says it has plans to expand the database over time.

Anyone who has spent any time sat in gridlock knows that Gauteng’s transit systems could use some improvement. And since Uber has put quite a few cars on the road since it launched several years ago, here’s hoping Movement can help ease the pain for SA’s commuters.
