FNB announces second generation ConeXis smartphones

Last year FNB launched its ConeXis devices and now its introducing the next generation of these smartphones.

Today, the bank announced two new handsets: the ConeXis A2 and the ConeXis X2.

The A2 is a rather low spec’d 4.5inch device sporting a quad-core CPU, 8GB of storage capacity and 1GB of RAM. Storage capacity can be increased up to 128GB with a microSD card. The low numbers continue through to the camera specs where at the back you’ll find a 5MP sensor and a 2MP in front.

Those looking for a more “premium” experience will likely find the X2 a better fit. The handset sports a dual rear camera with both a 13MP and 2MP snapper while at the front sits a 5MP snapper. The X2 will have 32GB of storage capacity. The X2 houses an octa-core processor which is paired with 3GB of RAM so multi-tasking should be a smoother experience.

The premium handset has a fingerprint scanner at the rear of the 5inch handset, as well as near field communications (NFC) that support FNB PAY as well as Tap and Pay. The device is fitted with LTE Cat 4 technology and is fully integrated with the FNB app.

Both handsets are running Android Nougat and FNB says that it plans to support upgrades to Android Oreo following compatibility tests.

The real value of these devices however is that it brings clients closer to FNB services particularly those that can’t traditionally afford a cellphone. By making devices such as these accessible, FNB hopes to help customers access more of its products and give them greater control of their telecommunications spend and their finances.

The handsets will ship with an FNB Connect SIM protective cover, screen protector and the box of the X2 doubles as a VR headset while the box of the A2 doubles as a money box.

To get the X2 customers will pay R199 per month and instead of doing a credit check FNB simply asks customers to deposit R1 500 into a savings account. Customers can also get a discount on the handset up to 100% if they are on Ebucks reward level 5.

The A2 will cost R69 per month and customers can get 100% discount if they are on Ebucks level 5. Customers will simply need to deposit R500 into a savings account to qualify for the device rather than being subjected to a credit check.

The devices hit FNB branches on 2nd October.
