Middle-earth: Shadow of War is R929 on South African Steam store

If you were planning on buying Middle-earth: Shadow of War on Steam, you may want to hold off on that.

For some reason this standard $60 game at R929. When Steam added regional pricing for South Africa, many games went down in price to better reflect the market in the country, but Shadow of War looks like it’s doing the opposite.

At the time of writing $60 directly converts to R823.71, so there is a big increase here. To make matters more confusing, local boxed copies are priced much cheaper. Both Raru and BT Games are selling the title for R539 and R555 respectively.

The current Steam prices for the unreleased game.

On the console side of things, you’ll also be paying a premium if you want a digital copy only. Looking again at Raru and BT Games for physical copies, and it’s priced at R799 and R825 respectively for both consoles.

If you then go to the local PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store, that price shoots up to R1 069.

All of this is looking past the Silver and Gold editions which come with extra content, for a price.

To make matters worse, the physical versions of the games planned for South Africa have been delayed by two days according to Nexus, which means digital is the only way to go if you want to play on launch day.

We’ve reached out to the local distributors of publisher Warner Bros. for a comment and will update this story if they reply.

Update: We’ve been told by the distributors, Ster-Kinekor Entertainment, that the online pricing is controlled by the publisher.
