South Africa does not have highest average data prices in Africa – Icasa

Contrary to popular reports, South Africa doesn’t have the priciest data in Africa.

This is according to Icasa’s newly released report on tariffs across South Africa’s big mobile networks.

Icasa released the report, titled Bi-Annual Report On The Analysis Of Tariff Notifications, which looks into tariff notifications submitted to it by network operators Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom, for the period from 01 January 2017 to 30 June 2017.

Out of 19 countries observed, Swaziland, Seychelles and the Democratic Republic of Congo have the top three average highest prices for a 500MB data bundle on the continent respectively, while South Africa only falls in fifth.

A similar trend was observed on 2GB  when looking into pricing across mobile networks in Southern Africa.

“On average, the data prices of the comparator countries are relatively higher than those of South Africa’s operators Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom Mobile. However, there are a few instances where operators in Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania are relatively cheaper
than South African operators by up to 80% in certain instances,” the report states.

Icasa hopes that, by releasing this report, consumers can make an informed choice, in terms of tariff plan preferences and/or preferred network providers based on their different offerings.

Also included in the report are prices of  fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-business plans, mobile network airtime and data promotions, flat-rate tariffs and more.

You can download and view the report on the Icasa website.
