Standard Bank forex app named MTN App of the Year

Standard Bank’s Shyft, a mobile forex app, won the overall App of the Year award at the 6th annual MTN Business App of the Year Awards last night.

Shyft allows customers to handle all their forex needs from their phone, with no need to visit the bank.

With Shyft, customers are able to purchase and store forex (USD, GBP, EUR, AUSD), transfer funds overseas, order multi-currency physical travel cards, and create virtual cards that can be used for international online shopping, all from a mobile device.

Shyft had also scooped the Best Financial Solution award before walking away with the big one of the night.

The awards have grown from 5 categories and 50 entries in their first year, to 12 categories and 600 entries now.

The winners in each category are:

  • Best Consumer Solution – Order In
  • Best Women in STEM Solution – Oru Social and Touch SA (joint winners)
  • Best Incubated Solution – Ecoslips
  • Best Breakthrough Developer – Zulzi
  • Best Financial Solution – Standard Bank Shyft
  • Best Agricultural Solution – Tree App
  • Best Educational Solution – Awethu Project

  • People’s Choice – Zulzi
  • Best Enterprise Solution – TransUnion 1Check

“I think we all feel incredibly honoured to be here. There’s a massive team that made this whole dream possible, a lot of them aren’t here tonight. This [award] is not just for us, this is for a big group of awesome people that saw the vision, came together and made this [app] a reality,” said Arno von Helden Head Forex Solutions, Standard Bank.

“I want to thank MTN for giving us this platform to show-case something that we feel passionately about. Shyft demonstrates what’s achievable when you put the customer at the center of what you’re trying to solve for. I also want to thank all the other contenders as the caliber of the competition was outstanding.”

As part of the grand prize, Standard Bank Shyft won R200 000 cash and the chance to join MTN Startup Programme.

The winners in each category received a certificate and a flat screen TV. They also get a chance to join the Startup Programme. MTN will follow up with each of them and be screened for it.

“What the Startup Programme does is that it will help them get seed funding to commercialise their apps, but over and above that, they become a part of our digital ecosystem and have access to over 23 markets we operate in,” Mandisa Ntloko, General Manager of Enterprise Marketing: MTN Business SA, told htxt.africa.

“We are proud of the strides the initiative has made in profiling the winning apps and transforming them into thriving and sustainable businesses,” she said.
