Huawei has announced details about the latest smartphones in its stable the Mate 10 and the larger Mate 10 Pro.

Traditionally the Mate series has been where Huawei has thrown caution to the wind and packed as much tech as it can into the handsets and that hasn’t changed.

Inside is a Kirin 970 chipset which touts an octacore ARM Cortex CPU, a Mali G72 GPU (which has 12 cores) and a Neural Network Processing Unit. That’s right the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will have artificial intelligence.

“As we enter the age of intelligence, AI is no longer a virtual concept but something that intertwines with our daily life. AI can enhance user experience, provide valuable services and improve product performance,” said the chief executive officer of Huawei’s consumer business group Richard Yu in a statement.

Huawei has said that not only will the AI on its handset will help users with features like AI Accelerated Translator but the capabilities will be opened to third parties to create new AI applications.

The return of Leica

Huawei and Leica have partnered once more for the the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro snappers. At the back of both handsets is a 12MP RGB sensor as well as a 20MP monochrome sensor. The camera also features a massive f/1.6 aperture so we’re expecting supreme low-light images and the AI has reached the camera as well.

“New AI-powered Real-Time Scene and Object Recognition, which automatically chooses camera settings based on the object and scene, supports an advanced AI-powered Digital Zoom function with AI Motion Detection for clearer and sharper pictures,” said Huawei.

The Mate 10 Pro is also has an IP67 water and dust resistance rating.

There is no word on price just yet but South Africans will be among the first in the world to get their hands on the latest Huawei smartphones. The local arm of the firm hasn’t disclosed pricing yet but given that pre-orders for the new Mate series open on 6th October we’re sure we won’t have to wait long for that.
