Zuma officially appoints SABC board

After countless delays and speculation over hidden agendas, President Jacob Zuma has officially signed the permanent SABC board in.

The Office of the Presidency announced on Tuesday morning that Zuma has appointed the board in terms of the South African Broadcasting Act (Act no. 4 of 1999), and on the recommendation of the National Assembly.

Zuma is almost a month late with the appointment, after the names of the board were presented to him in late September.

Zuma had said he was still considering the names and wanted to do background checks on the qualifications and criminal records of all the candidates, while he and Minister of Communications Ayanda Dlodlo, were of accused stalling the process for their own agendas.

These are the 12 that will serve for a period of five years, with immediate effect:
Ms Febe Potgieter-Gqubule
Mr Krish Naidoo
Ms Khanyisile Kweyama
Mr John Matisonn
Mr Mathatha Tsedu
Ms Rachel Kalidass
Mr Michael Markovitz
Mr Bongumusa Makhathini
Mr Victor Rambau
Mr Dinkwanyane Mohuba and
Mr Jack Phalane

The President selected Bongumusa Makhathini as Chairperson and Febe Potgieter-Gqubule as Deputy Chairperson of the SABC Board.

“President Zuma wishes all members of the Board all the best during their tenure at the public broadcaster,” Presidency said.
