Zimbabwean startup wins HiiL Southern African Boostcamp

Road Rules, a Zimbabwean startup aimed at educating drivers about Zimbabwe’s highway laws, has won the The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) Boostcamp challenge.

HiiL recently hosted the semi-finals of its international Innovating Justice Challenge which seeks out startups with innovative ideas related to legal solutions.

Presented by Tawanda Chikosi, Road Rules also aims to equip Zimbabweans with traffic laws and regulations to assist them in resisting bribes.

Road Rules wins a 5000 Euros cash prize, and a place at HiiL’s Justice Entrepreneur School (JES) in The Hague this December. The JES is a specialist business accelerator designed to aid justice innovations.

Joining Chikosi at the JES will be Samantha N Ngcolomba of South Africa’s Lady Liberty, a mobile legal office which enables lawyers to visit remote areas and offer assistance around family law issues.

Road Rules and Lady Liberty were two of seven startups from South Africa and Zimbabwe who presented their innovations to a panel of judges at the Innovating Justice Boostcamp on 13th October, in front of an audience including South Africa’s Deputy Minister for Justice and Constitutional Development, John Jeffery and Dutch Ambassador to South Africa, Marisa Gerards.

A number of regional semi-finalists will also receive extra financial and logistic support from HiiL.

“We’ve been highly impressed with the quality of justice innovations that have come out of the Southern Africa region over the last year,” said Head of the HiiL Justice Accelerator, Wilfried de Wever, “Road Rules and Lady Liberty are two of the strongest startups we’ve seen globally. All of our semi-finalists are exceptional, however, and we hope to be able to increase our activity in the area to provide more entrepreneurs with more support and the tools they need to bring justice to all in the future.”
