Two R3 000 GPUs drive massive outdoor displays in Menlyn

Samsung has unveiled two massive outdoor displays at the Sun International Time Square Hotel, Casino and Entertainment complex in Menlyn Pretoria.

The two displays are from Samsung’s XPS series of smart LED signage. They feature a 49.2920Hz refresh rate and a cabinet design that Samsung says deters light interference so that the image is bright, crisp and clear.

For interest sakes the displays are to hit 9 000nit on the brightness scale.

While 15m x 9m and 9m x 6m displays that weigh 7 425kgs and 2 925kgs respectively are cool in their own right we wanted to know what tech was driving these displays and Samsung was kind enough to provide us with that information.

The control system running the two displays (yes both) is a Dell Precision Rack 7910 which contains the following components.

Memory 8GB (2x4GB) 2400MHz DDR4 RDIMM ECC
Video Card 2x Dual NVIDIA® Quadro® K620 2GB (DP, DL-DVI-I) (2 DP to SL-DVI adapter)
Hard Drive 1TB 2.5 inch Serial ATA (7200 RPM) Hard Drive
Operating System Windows 10 Pro 64bit
Network Card Intel I350 (4x1Gbit) Quad Port Network Card
Processor Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2603 v3 (6C,1.6GHz, 10M, 85W)
Power Supply Dual, Hot-plug, Redundant Power Supply (1+1), 1100W

We shopped around and found the NVIDIA Quadro K260 2GB for R3 139 on FirstShop.

The rack has PrismView CMS, PV11 Player, PV11 Client and PrismView System Matrix installed on it.

The real magic however is how Samsung got the image from the rack to those huge displays.

“Each K620 converts DVI to Fibre via a Geffen FM5000 sender and converts back to DVI at each screen via a Geffen FM5000 receiver, which then sends the video signal to the PrismView Y7 DVI Interfaces installed in each display to manage the image mapping over the extent of each screen,” Samsung Enterprise Business lead Paul Wharton-Hood told us.

So when you visit the Time Square Hotel, Casino and Entertainment complex in Menlyn and gasp in awe at the massive displays remember it’s not the tech that makes that possible but clever applications and an even smarter human.
