Johannesburg Water dispatches water tankers to deal with possible Northriding water contamination

At 06:30 today the Johannesburg Water Twitter account released an official warning of a possible water contamination problem taking place in a certain part of Northriding.

The statement suggests that sewage had been mixed into the water system.

“Aureole street in the north, Boundary road in the west, Spionkop road in the east and Olievenhoudt street in the south. All streets within this boundary may be affected,” the statement reads.

Some users on Twitter also report receiving an SMS containing the same warning.

At the time of writing the page has been updated with news of water tankers being dispatched to the area to provide clean drinking and cooking water.

This Tweet also provided an expected time for the resolution of the problem:

Samples have been taken for testing and we expect the results latest this afternoon. All other residents of North Riding are free to use the water. The system has been flushed with Chlorine and there is no cause for panic at this stage as only a few streets have been possibly affected and the residents have been informed accordingly.

We’ve drawn up a rough outline of the affected area which you can view below, followed by the official statements from Johannesburg Water:
