Take a virtual walk through some of South Africa’s most beautiful scenery

Do you need to get out of the office today and get a bit closer to nature?

While we can’t call your office to tell your boss to give you the day off we can offer you an alternative and we have Google to thank.

A team of locals have mapped 170 trails, six UNESCO World Heritage Sites and all 19 of our National parks using 360 cameras provided by Google’s Trekker Loan Program.

You can head to the South Africa in 360 microsite set up by Discover Africa which uses VR tech to showcase the imagery that has been captured in the Drakensberg and Table Mountain among others.

“The 360-images that were captured by the 22kg Google Trekker camera, was supported by amazing drone footage, photographs and videos painstakingly taken by our team. South Africa in 360 aims to create a new window into our country and our interactive microsite not only uses Google’s technology to promote tourism, but also highlights the pride that South Africans have in their land,” said Andre van Kets of Drive South Africa which contributed to the project.

The team of locals that helped put this project together took 250 000 photographs and trekked through 59 000 km of terrain over the last 12 months.
