Break-in at City of Joburg data centre an inside job – Mashaba

The City of Joburg’s data centre fell prey to criminals at the weekend.

The data centre was broken into and copper cables estimated to be worth R2 million were stolen, executive mayor Herman Mashaba said in a statement yesterday.

“I believe that the break-in is intended to sabotage the initiative of building and securing our own data and infrastructure environment,” said Mashaba.

It is believed that the criminals entered the data centre in the early hours of Sunday morning. The cables were removed using grinding machines.

“We suspect that this was an inside job, judging from the way that the criminals gained access to the building. There are no signs of forced entry from the door they used,” added the executive mayor.

The City of Joburg is offering a reward of R100 000 for any information that leads to the arrest and successful prosecution of those involved in the attempted sabotage.

The stolen cables were connected to two power generators that were being tested. The City of Joburg added that no damages or power outages were experience.
