iFrogz Impulse Duo Dual Driver Wireless Earphones

Give me the choice, and 9 times out of 10 I’ll take the wired gadget. I’m just not a big fan of wireless tech due to its poor reliability, even though it is, admittedly, a lot better today than it’s ever been.

These earphones haven’t changed my opinion. While I like them (especially their price), despite sitting less than half a metre from the laptop I had them connected to, the audio they were conveying to my ears via Bluetooth would cut out briefly every now and then, for no reason I could discern.

My phone (a Galaxy S8) also couldn’t “see” the headphones when I attempted to pair them – they simply refused to appear in the list of available devices. I couldn’t even find their hardware address, and believe me, I looked. So not a great start, then.

Quite lovely otherwise

And that’s a pity, because they are quite lovely in every other way, including a rather nice price of less than R800. Setting them up is easy as pie – I simply squeezed the Power button and paired them with my laptop (which “saw” them right away). This sets them to the default audio device.

Sound came through immediately, and it was good – bass was nice and deep, mids and highs clear (thanks to the dual driver design), and they achieved a pleasantly loud but not eardrum-bursting volume, which is exactly what I am looking for.

Good fit

They also fit nicely in my ear, as they came with three different-sized replaceable silicone tips for earholes of varying sizes, which sealed me into a pleasant sound cocoon. Oddly, the earphones themselves don’t say which ear they are for, so I had to experiment. That worked out fine – I figured out which way worked best all on my lonesome – but I was still a bit annoyed about it.

I wore these in the office quite a bit, even when I went to make myself coffee. They didn’t cut out any more than usual while I was +- 10m from my desk (but with line of sight to my laptop unbroken), so they’re pretty great for listening to audio while walking around your room. Just don’t get any walls between you and your audio source, and you’ll be fine.

I also liked that they last ages on a single charge. The box says 10 hours of continual playback, and I can attest to that. They are back up to 100% in less than an hour of charging, too, so they are super convenient to own and operate.

Nifty magnet clasp

The control box the earphones themselves are attached to by wire is incredibly lightweight, and attached to my shirt by way of a very nifty magnetic clasp. Getting it on and off was a breeze.

The design, then, is fantastic. The audio is pretty good. The cost is nice and low (sub-R800). The range is good. I just don’t like how spotty the wireless connection proved to be.

If it wasn’t for that, I’d give these earphones an unreserved recommendation. Instead, I’ll say get these if you’re on a tight budget and you must absolutely have wireless earphones.
