Kobolds and Catacombs card reveal season kicks off

The final Hearthstone expansion for the year is set to arrive sometime in mid-December which means that we’re now in the heart of reveal/spoiler season.

Yesterday evening streamer and card game master Brian Kibler and Hearthstone game designer Peter Whalen hosted a live stream where some of the latest cards were revealed.

Spoilers ahead.

The first card revealed was the Feral Gibberer, a 1/1 minion that costs one mana with the text, “After this minion attacks a hero, add a copy of it to your hand.”

The card’s attack sound is incredibly annoying as is its effect. Perhaps this card will make the Rogue quest viable again.

Speaking of which the next card revealed as a Rogue secret. Traditionally Secrets have been the realm of Mage, Paladin and Hunter although the theme of Rogue has lent itself to the idea of Secrets.

The first Secret revealed was Sudden Betrayal. This two-mana Secret has the text “When a minion attacks your hero, instead it attacks one of its neighbours.”

Positioning of minions looks like it will be very important once Kobolds and Catacombs releases so maybe start taking that into account before release day.

The second Rogue Secret (there will be three in total) revealed was Cheat Death. For two-mana (obviously) “When a friendly minion dies, return it to your hand. It costs (2) less.”

Basically this is a Shadowstep that you don’t control but you could tempt an opponent to put a Vilespine Slayer back into your hand, especially if it has a Bonemare buff.

Dragons return, sort of

What would a dungeon themed expansion be without a few dragons? There are a few Dragons in the new expansion as well as “dragon matters” cards such as Netherspite Historian.

A card that fulfills both of those requirements in Duskbreaker. A four-mana Priest Dragon with 3/3 stats and the Battlecry: “If you’re holding a Dragon, deal 3 damage to all other minions.”

This sounds like a great card for early board clears and while the stats are pretty average, Priest is not really able to deal with an aggressive opponent early on.

The Legendary Weapon for the Shaman class was also revealed. The Runespear is an 8-mana card with 3/3 stats and the text “After your hero attacks, Discover a spell and cast it with random targets.”

Time to craft all the Ooze cards.

Prepare for Druid shenanigans

Did you loathe Ultimate Infestation? Are you fed up with Druid playing one card and summoning a 13/13 minion? Good news! It’s about to get worse.

The Druid card revealed last night is Branching Paths and it’s a Choose Two card.

Player will be able to draw a card, give minions +1 attack or gain 6 armour, twice. That’s right players can select the same option twice so they can draw two cards, give minions +2 attack or gain 12 armour for four mana.

This should end well.

Paladin also had a card revealed – Level Up! For five-mana you will be able to give your Silver Hand Recruits +2/+2 and Taunt.

While that is a cool idea at the moment leaving a Paladin with any minions on the board is dangerous and so many folks clear the board as often as possible. Knowing that my opponent will be giving their 1/1 dudes extra stats and taunt at turn five would make me target them more. Cool idea but it needs other cards to be effective.

Spellstone and Beasts

Warrior’s Spellstone was revealed and it is not very inspiring at all. Lesser Mithril Spellstone costs seven-mana and summons a 5/5 Mithril Golem. That summon is upgraded every time a weapon is equipped while it is in your hand until you summon three Golems.

Uninspiring and it just seemed to get even more uninspiring when the Hunter Legendary card was revealed.

Kathrena Winterwisp is an eight-mana Legendary minion with 6/6 stats and the Battlecry and Deathrattle “Recruit a Beast”.

That means that Winterwisp will automatically pull a Beast from your deck and place it on the board which sounds cool until you realise that Hunter is a very aggressive class and this card doesn’t really suit that archetype.

So far then that cards in Kobolds and Catacombs are rather average but then we don’t really know what exactly to expect. Perhaps future reveals will make Control Hunter a viable possibility or even thrust Quest Rogue back into the meta-game.

Card reveals have been set up for nearly everyday moving forward and if we spot anything that seems noteworthy we’ll be sure to share it.
