Mozilla launches revamped Firefox Quantum browser

Mozilla has released version 57 of Firefox  – or as its more widely becoming known this morning – Firefox Quantum.

The revamped browser sports an all-new engine that makes the loading of pages faster and lowers the consumption of resources such as RAM.

Mozilla is making some big claims with the release of Quantum, such as its browser being twice as fast as Google Chrome and 30% less resource hungry.

A quick look at our resource monitor reveals that Quantum does use 30 – 40MB less RAM than Chrome does, which is great for folks like me that have several browser windows open at the same time.

We do have some doubts about the claim that Quantum is faster so, armed with a stop watch we got to testing.

Using the Private Window in Firefox and the Incognito Mode in Chrome we loaded up htxt.africa and timed how long it took. We conducted this test five times on a 5Mbps internet conenction, closing the browser window each time and our results are illustrated below.

So Chrome is faster, but we must point out that with Adblocker enabled for Chrome and Origin Ublock enabled for Quantum the results are within seconds of each other and Firefox does win that race.

All of this said, I’ve been using Firefox for the last few months alongside Chrome and this iteration of the browser does feel a lot slicker and faster than Firefox 56 did.

Ultimately it comes down to user experience and, thankfully, trying a new browser won’t cost you anything. If you’re tired of Chrome hogging resources perhaps give Quantum a go.
