Twitter has started un-verifying white supremacists

For a group of people who like to hurl the term ‘snowflake’ at their political and social opponents, white supremacists and nazis are certainly a touchy bunch.

Several weeks ago, a lot of them took exception to Bethesda promoting the excellent new Wolfenstein game with a tweet that read: “Make America Nazi-Free Again. #NoMoreNazis”.

Now they’re up in arms again, because Twitter has decided to un-verify the accounts of several prominent white supremacists. Among those who lost their all-important blue tick on Twitter are white nationalist Richard Spencer and Jason Kessler, the man behind the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville earlier this year.

It seems Twitter has decided to revamp its rules of play somewhat, possibly with the aim in mind to make the social media platform a nicer place (yeah, good luck with that). This means that people who promote hatred and violence, share disturbing imagery or incite harassment will lose their blue ticks permanently.

Twitter explained the reasoning behind the new rules in a tweet saying, “verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. We recognise that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it. We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon.”

Naturally this has prompted the usual complaint that right-wingers hurl against Twitter; that the social media website is stamping all over the free speech of anyone it disagrees with politically. Most of these complaints are being made from their Twitter accounts. Go figure.
