From third party to 3D prints, there’s a lot of great accessories out there for the Nintendo Switch, so here’s another one you can make completely out of LEGO.

The simple case we’ve designed can fit six cartridges, but you can cram 12 in there if you’re feeling brave. It’s also small enough to fit in your pocket so it won’t be tacking up too much space if you’re already carrying your Switch around in a bigger bag.

The design comes from the happy coincidence that these cartridges are held perfectly in place with this panel piece. When separated by one stud, they offer just enough friction to hold the cart in place while leaving it loose enough to remove.

You can stack two carts on top of each other to get to a total of 12, but the top ones will not be held very securely.

This comes with two big disclaimers. Firstly, there are a two different types of this panel piece floating around. The ones we used have thin walls and can perfectly accommodate the carts. The other kind has a slightly thicker outer wall which makes inserting the carts impossible.

This also leads to the second disclaimer that this case may very well damage your games, especially if you try and shove them in with the thicker pieces. We haven’t done any extensive testing, so please be careful.

Before we get to the parts list and instructions (embedded below) we suspect that the panels from 2016 onward are the ones you want, so keep that in mind when shopping around.

We’ve gone with a sleek all-black build here but you can, of course, use any colours you want.

If you don’t have the required pieces on hand you have two options that save you the hassle of buying whole sets for individual parts.

LEGO offers two services – Pick A Brick and Bricks & Pieces – to order individual parts. Both of these are only available in select countries and can be on the pricey side.

Alternatively there’s BrickLink, which is a lot like eBay for LEGO pieces. It can be difficult to use, especially when you’re trying to buy multiple parts across various sellers, so take some time to read up on this store.

No matter what you choose try and contact the sellers beforehand to ask about the thinner panel pieces.
