Google cuts YouTube app access on Amazon devices

The festive season is meant to be a time where we put our differences aside and treat folks a bit kinder. It seems like that memo wasn’t delivered to Silicon Valley.

Amazon devices including the Echo Show and Fire TV will no longer be able to access the YouTube application. The reason? A spat between Google and Amazon.

You see, Amazon has refused to sell Google hardware such as the Chromecast and Google Home. The online retailer has also not allowed Google Cast to access Amazon Prime Video.

In response Google has blocked off access to YouTube.

“We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services. But Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest’s latest products,” Google told Variety.

Amazon users can still access YouTube via a web browser but the retailer fired shots at Google for making the decision to restrict its service.

“Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website. We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible,” said Amazon.

The real loser in this situation are the users who are now stuck in the middle of a very public spat between two tech giants and, if we’re being honest, this whole situation reminds us of two children who can’t learn to share.

Sort your differences out Amazon and Google or users might just abandon your services and go somewhere else.
