How do public SA universities rank globally and across Africa?

South Africa has 26 public universities located in all nine provinces. This gives parents and pupils looking for an institution of higher learning a wide variety to choose from and for some, a university’s standards ranking is a big factor in choosing where to study.

Each year, a select number of universities across the world, including South Africa are ranked against each other to determine which are the top institutions.

QS World University Rankings features 959 institutions and ranks them globally as well as according to region, subjects and employability of graduates who leave the institution.

Th QS World Rankings 2018 are the latest to be released, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) holding the number one spot, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University in second and third respectively.

SA university rankings

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is the top most ranked university in Africa, followed by Stellenbosch University in second and Wits University in third. This also means these three are the top ranking in South Africa.

Internationally, UCT ranks in at 191, Stellenbosch at 361 and Wits at 364.

UCT ranked in 10th place globally in the Rankings by Subject category for its Development Studies courses and in 101st for employability (99.3% of graduates become employed after leaving).

Stellenbosch University is ranked at 301 for graduate employability (58%), while Wits ranked at 201 (87.%) in the same category.
