Mark Zuckerberg’s personal challenge for 2018 is to ‘fix’ Facebook

Did you make any new year’s resolutions? Did you vow to head to the gym more often? Get a new job? Spend more time with friends and loved ones?

As worthy as these commitments may sound, they’re nowhere as Herculean as the task Mark Zuckerberg has set himself for 2018: he says he’s going to fix Facebook. Yes, really.

In a blog post, the Facebook CEO acknowledged that the world’s biggest social media platform has a lot of issues that need to be addressed.

“The world feels anxious and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Whether it’s protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.”

It’s a pretty glaring admission of the rather controversial year that Facebook – and other social media platforms – had in 2017. In the wake of Donald Trump becoming the 45th president of the United States Of America, the issue of misinformation and outside manipulation remained a hot topic throughout the year.

In the months since Trump took office, Facebook has admitted that not only did Russia manage to reach voters through its platform, but also admitted that users’ mental health could be affected through passive use.

Zuckerberg said that the issues facing the social media site “touch on questions of history, civics, political philosophy, media, government, and of course technology” and that he will be consulting experts in these fields to help correct Facebook’s course.

“This will be a serious year of self-improvement and I’m looking forward to learning from working to fix our issues together,” Zuckerberg wrote.
