Intel CEO thanks industry for coming together to address Meltdown and Spectre

Having recently come under fire for a vulnerability that affects almost every Intel processor in recent years Intel’s opening keynote at CES 2018 was set to be a “must watch” affair.

The firm’s chief executive officer Brian Krzanich took to the stage to welcome attendees and address the elephant in the room.

“I want to take a moment to thank the industry for coming together for another purpose – to address the recent security research findings reported as “Meltdown” and “Spectre”,” said Krzanich.

He added, “The collaboration among so many companies to address this industry-wide issue across several different processor architectures has been truly remarkable.”

The chief exec went on to say that Intel has not received information that Meltdown or Spectre has been used to steal customer data.

Updates for all

Intel’s customers have been assured that 90 percent of the processors released in the last five years will receive updates within the next week and the remainder should receive updates before the end of January.

Users worried about a slow down in performance once the update is applied were not given too much hope that the updates wouldn’t turn their systems into electronic treacle.

“We believe the performance impact of these updates is highly workload-dependent. As a result, we expect some workloads may have a larger impact than others, so we will continue working with the industry to minimize the impact on those workloads over time,” said Krzanich.

Hopefully users will be a bit safer once those updates come down.
