SA business school now accepts bitcoin as payment

If you’re sitting on a big pile of bitcoin and you fancy studying some courses to enhance your digital and business skills, we have some good news for you.

SA business school Red & Yellow has announced that it is now accepting bitcoin as payment for all degrees, certificates, diplomas and online courses.

Established in 1994, Red & Yellow boasts campuses in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, which offer courses aimed at preparing students for a “digital future”. To that end, students can study degrees in visual communications, online courses in digital marketing, social media and marketing strategy, executive workshops and more.

“The world is changing rapidly, as are our students and it’s our responsibility to ensure we are serving their future focussed needs” says Rob Stokes, Chairman of Red & Yellow.

“The reality is that Bitcoin is here to stay and with many youngsters having made a good return on their investment in cryptocurrencies, they now want to use this digital cash to invest in their education, as future leaders.”

While this all sounds great, one has to wonder how Red & Yellow is going to manage to make sure neither the faculty nor its students end up out of pocket, given bitcoin’s fluctuating fortunes of late.

“Once the bitcoin payment for a course is made, Red & Yellow converts it to rands immediately at the prevailing rate,” says Stokes. “This way the payment for both the student and the faculty is secured.”

“As a business we have a lot of costs and that’s why we convert the cryptocurrency immediately at present,” he says. “However, if at some stage we find half of our students are paying in bitcoin, we may keep some of that for future investments, because we believe bitcoin is in for the long haul.”

“At present, the intention is not just investment on our part, it’s to make this method to students who have requested we do this.”
