Nine South African schools achieved a 0% matric pass rate in 2017, according to a report released by the Department of Basic Education.
The department’s minister Hubert Mthanzima Mweli announced the news just ahead of matric results being released at a briefing in Auckland Park last week.
As dire as this news sounds, it’s an improvement on last year, when 18 schools reported a 0% per cent matric pass rate.
Five of the nine schools reporting a 0% pass rate are based in KZN, one is in Gauteng, one is in Limpopo and the remaining two are situated in the Eastern Cape.
Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says that efforts we be refocussed to aid the schools in question make sure things improve
“We know about these schools and are always concerned about such cases,” Mhlanga told EWN.
“What we do each year is we identify these schools and target them to receive support from the department. The aim is to understand exactly where the problems are and work on fixing them,” he added.
