YouTube gives Logan Paul the Pewdiepie treatment

YouTube has cracked the whip on Logan Paul after he uploaded a video showing a suicide victim in Japan’s Aokigahara Forest.

The platform said yesterday that it was looking at “further consequences” in relation to Paul’s channel and the YouTuber’s “punishment” does seem to mirror what happened to Felix “Pewdiepie” Kjellberg last year.

One of the consequences that will now befall Paul is that he will no longer be a part of Google’s Preferred advertising programme.

“Additionally, we will not feature Logan in season four of ‘Foursome’ and his new Originals are on hold,” a YouTube spokeswoman told Billboard. The YouTube Red film starring Logan Paul – The Thinning: A New World Order – has also reportedly been put on hold.

This is similar to how YouTube responded to Kjellberg courting controversy last year.

If that was not enough Paul’s channel has also received a strike which might not sound like a big deal but if a creator gets three strikes in a three month period that’s it, the channel is deleted.

Good guy YouTube?

A number of YouTubers including Philip De Franco have pointed out that YouTube’s hands are not clean in this matter.

As De Franco points out YouTube didn’t remove Paul’s video and instead the video – which showcased a corpse in the thumbnail – reached the platform’s trending page. Only once the broader community criticised Paul did he remove the video himself.

De Franco and producer of the Philip De Franco show Amanda Morones discussed what this decision might mean for all YouTubers in a video you can check out below. The biggest fear appears to be YouTube painting all controversial content with the same brush it has used on Paul.

Whether this incident presents a teachable moment for Paul remains to be seen. Aside from an apology video posted last week, the once-daily vlogger has not uploaded since then.
