Unisa vows registration process will run smoothly

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has vowed that the registration at its Sunnyside campus will run more smoothly from today.

This follows reports yesterday that there were massive disruptions on the campus when security locked the gates, which prompted some students to climb over the fence in order to register.

Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshela told EWN that the university has measures in place to make sure the registration process takes place today in a more orderly manner.

“We’ll try and avoid any form of stampede, we’ll manage the queues properly,” Ramotshela said.

“As we speak now, there are people already quieting outside our campus in Sunnyside and as soon as the gates open and staff is in, we’ll manage the queues properly and we’ll avoid any form of stampede.”

In the meantime, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the South African Students Congress (Sasco) are giving Unisa time to consider a list of demands issued last week, which includes allowing recently graduated matrics to register for free education. Both groups have vowed the shut down Unisa if the demands aren’t met.
