More than 28 000 Gauteng pupils have yet to be placed in schools

If you’re driving to work this morning you may have noticed that rush hour traffic is back to its old horrible self. This is because school holidays are over and today all pupils return to class.

However, even though the school year has officially started, reports have surfaced that over 28 000 pupils in Gauteng have still not been placed in schools.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says that over 2 000 pupils who have not been registered have been placed at schools, and that the department is working to clear a backlog of over 28 000 by the middle of next month.

“We’ve a problem of choice but when we resolve some of the challenges that we have, I think all learners should be placed by mid-February,” EWN reported Lesufi as saying. “I think everyone will be placed by then.”

Lesufi also called on parents and communities to not disrupt schools and warned that the department would dissolve student governing bodies who did not act in the interests of education.

“When there are disruptions to education, we will not hesitate to disband any SGB that is not advancing the interest of education, decisive steps will be taken,” Lesufi said.
