Steven Soderbergh’s new film Unsane was shot on iPhones

Just when you think Hollywood is running out of ways to surprise us, Steven Soderbergh steps forward with news that may make every budding filmmaker with a phone froth at the mouth.

At this year’s Sundance film festival, which Soderbergh was attending as executive producer of The King (a documentary on Elvis Presley and his impact on US culture), the director of slick thrillers like Ocean’s Eleven, Out Of Sight and Haywire made a rather interesting announcement. His latest film has been shot entirely on iPhones.

This in itself isn’t the first time a director has made use of Apple’s smartphones to capture footage; Sean Baker’s touching drama about transvestite prostitutes in LA, Tangerine, was shot the same way.

But to hear Soderbergh tell it, the experience of using iPhones to shoot an entire film was good enough to make him seriously consider adopting this method going forward.

“I think this is the future,” Soderbergh said. “Anybody going to see this movie who has no idea of the backstory to the production will have no idea this was shot on the phone. That’s not part of the conceit.”

Soderbergh’s not wrong; take a look at the trailer for Unsane below and ask yourself: does this look like something you’d see on Instagram?

Alongside the way it was shot, Unsane’s subject matter is also a bit of gear change for Soderbergh. The story centres around a woman (played by The Crown’s star Claire Foy) who finds herself mistakenly checked into a mental asylum. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival last week and goes on general release in the States this March.
