Microtransactions are coming back to Battlefront 2

In news that should surprise absolutely nobody, Electronic Arts will be bring microtransactions back to Star Wars Battlefront 2 in the coming months.

The news comes to us via The Wall Street Journal which reports that, in the wake of the lootbox controversy, EA sold less copies of Battlefront 2 than it expected.

Chief financial officer at EA Blake Jorgensen said that microtransactions would return in the next few months, but didn’t give an exact date instead saying the firm will release them “when we think it’s ready.”

For those interested: EA sold nine million copies of Battlefront 2, as opposed to the projected 10 million they hoped to sell.

So that ought to show EA that we won’t stand for predatory microtransactions right? Wrong.

First off, live services (which include microtransactions) brought in more money than ever before.

“Live services net bookings were up 39% year on year, to $787 million. The increase was driven by Ultimate Team and The Sims 4. This was a record for the third quarter,” Jorgensen said in prepared remarks.

So looking at those figures why would EA give up this cash?

And if you still think that EA could be persuaded to turn its back on microtransactions, here is what EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson had to say about the matter.

“Going forward, we believe that live services that include optional digital monetization, when done right, provide a very important element of choice that can extend and enhance the experience in our games. We’re committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services.”

So microtransactions are here to stay and it’s seemingly going to take more than shorting EA by one million sales to inspire a change.
