Beat Saber combines laser swords and rhythm games in VR

Beat Saber has shown us something we didn’t know we wanted: a VR rythm game where you use lightsabers to slice up cubes that represent beats.

In a gameplay teaser released over the weekend, the player is seen equipped with two lightsabers as cubes fly towards them. They’ll need to hit the beats with not only the right colour saber, but also in the right direction.

The Czech developer Hyperbolic Magnetism says it is “easily described as a mashup of Guitar Hero and Fruit Ninja in VR”. They also say that the game has been in development since 2016 and has received positive feedback from more than 700 people that have tried it during showcases.

Going by Beat Saber’s official site, the game has a release date of “2018”. There’s also the logos for all three major VR platforms – HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR – so you should be able to play regardless of your choice of headset.
