Five apps that can help you through school

The 2017 academic year may be virtually over, but before you know it, 2018 will roll in and you’ll be hitting the books again. Whether you need to brush up on a few repeat subjects, have progressed to the next level or have child, we have a list of five suggested apps that could help you or your child ace the year.

Via Afrika Test Urself

Via Afrika Test-Urself is an Android app that lets grade four to 12 learners test their knowledge in subjects such as Maths, all eleven official South African languages, Geography, History and more. Each subject has a set of quizzes that you have to answer. To get started, download a set of quizzes, the first quiz is free and thereafter you’ll have to buy more quizzes using credits (credits start at R10 for 10 credits and quizzes cost two credits each).

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is one of the world’s most popular online learning platforms. It features over 10 000 video tutorials on subjects including maths, science, economics, history and more.

After watching content, you can put what you’ve learned to the test using the over 40 000 interactive Common Core aligned practice questions which have instant feedback and step-by-step hints.

The app also works offline after you’ve downloaded content, so you won’t have to worry much about using too much data.

Xander Education

Award-winning primary school education app creators, Xander Education, combines fun and learning to help younger pupils in the foundation phase through apps created in the most popular official Southern African languages including Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, Tswana, Sotho, Swahili, Shona and English.

Kids can learn shapes, colours, numeracy and more.

Tuta-Me

Colloquially called the Uber of tutoring apps, Tuta-Me is an on-demand service that lets people book a tutor for themselves or a child, for tutoring in a variety of subjects. The first-of-its-kind app locates tutors registered on the service and lets users choose one suitable to their needs.

The app was developed by two young entrepreneurs and in the short space of less than five year in existence, has won a number of local app awards.
