What subjects should your child consider if they want to work in STEM?

South Africa is currently facing a huge gap in the science, tech, engineering and maths (STEM) sector as universities aren’t producing enough graduates to fill the demand required in the modern era, according to government.

Government has been on active drive to help encourage school pupils to pursue subjects that will lead to careers in STEM and help drive South Africa forward in each field.

Parents and teachers can also play an active role in guiding children in the right direction, namely by encouraging them to take up and excel in STEM subjects.

It’s obvious that science, tech, engineering and maths are the foremost subjects to pursue. However, there are supplementary subjects that can help bolster knowledge and excellence in the four.

These include:

  • Geography
  • Coding
  • Technical drawing
  • Architechture
  • Design
  • Computer science
  • Economics
  • Accounting
  • Graphic Design
  • Agriculture

These broaden the scope of knowledge in a particular field and can assist in preparing pupil for entry into university courses relevant to the particular field they are interested in.
