Alleged hacker Lauri Love wins appeal against extradition to the US

Lauri Love, the UK hacker suspected of breaking into the CIA, FBI, Nasa and US Central Bank systems, has won his appeal against being extradited to the United States.

In what civil rights groups and the legal team representing the 33-year-old man are calling a landmark judgement, high court judge, lord chief justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, blocked the extradition, saying the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) should try Love’s case.

“It would not be oppressive to prosecute Mr Love in England for the offences alleged against him,” Lord Burnett said in his judgement. “Far from it. Much of Mr Love’s argument was based on the contention that this is indeed where he should be prosecuted.”

“The CPS must now bend its endeavours to his prosecution, with the assistance to be expected from the authorities in the United States, recognising the gravity of the allegations in this case, and the harm done to the victims,” he added.

Lawyers for Mr Love, who has Aspergers syndrome, argued that extraditing him to the United States would bring with it a high risk that he would take his own life.

US authorities can appeal the high court ruling and have 14 days to do so.

Lauri Love is alleged to have helped himself to large amounts of data from US government agencies during a series of cyber attacks that took place in 2012 and 2013.
