Outa offers help to the Hawks to investigate state capture at Eskom

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) has offered its help to the new Eskom board and the Hawks to battle state capture at the parastatal.

The Hawks served a subpoena asking the new Eskom board for documents relating to their investigation into Eskom over allegations of state capture. Eskom confirmed yesterday that the requested documents were given over yesterday. The subpoena was served just days after Phakamani Radebe was announced as the parastatal’s interim chief.

Outa said in a statement it welcomes the investigation and will do anything it can to help.

“Together, we need to get to the root of the problem and in doing so map the path to rebuilding this once great institution to the powerhouse it can be,” said Outa CEO aid Wayne Duvenage.

“This is a critical step in identifying exactly how deep the rot is in Eskom and we trust that those involved in corrupt dealings will soon face justice,” Duvenage said. “This investigation will be the first proper attempt to fix the very sick state utility.”

Outa has been been taking an active role for some time regarding the allegations of state capture at South Africa’s power parastatal. Last year, the organisation stated that the The National Energy Regulator (Nersa) allowed Eskom to hide details about allegedly corrupt dealings with regards to coal procurement. It also vigorously opposed Brian Molefe’s return as Eskom’s CEO.

“Eskom is a critical enabler for the economy and every effort must be made to save it,” said Duvenage.
