Face swapped porn created with the help of AI is being banned

A number of websites have begun banning pornographic videos which feature celebrities.

What makes this story surprising is that the videos are faked. Users are using artificial intelligence to combine footage of celebrities with footage of pornstars to create a new “genre” of porn known as Deepfakes.

Except it’s being culled out of the gate as a number of websites have begun banning deepfakes.

Earlier this week Pornhub banned deepfakes saying it classifies these sorts of videos as nonconsensual porn.

“Nonconsensual content directly violates our TOS [terms of service] and consists of content such as revenge porn, deepfakes or anything published without a person’s consent or permission,” a Pornhub spokesperson told Motherboard.

The next site to ban the faked porn by way of a policy update was Reddit.

“We want to let you know that we have made some updates to our site-wide rules against involuntary pornography and sexual or suggestive content involving minors. These policies were previously combined in a single rule; they will now be broken out into two distinct ones,” an administrator said in an announcement on Reddit.

Following this announcement Reddit banned several subreddits which have come to be known for circulating pornographic deepfake videos which feature celebrities.

It’s important to note that Reddit isn’t banning deepfakes completely but just the porn side of it. There is still r/SFWdeepfakes which features folks placing The Room’s Tommy Wiseau in unexpected movies among others.

But is that okay?

It’s a moral dilemma that Tom Scott explores in the video below. For those that can’t watch the video the YouTuber explains the technology and concludes by saying humanity is likely not ready for deepfakes, pornographic or otherwise.
