Michael Fassbender to star in feature length Kung Fury

There are some headlines you never expect to be writing first thing in the morning. Cast your eyes above this paragraph and tell me this isn’t a world gone topsy turvy.

This isn’t a joke by the way (April 1st is still a way’s off). According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter Michael Fassbender has been cast in David Sandberg’s neon-soaked mash up of 80s tropes and outright farce (and I mean that affectionately) Kung Fury. The movie is a direct sequel to the cult internet hit, which racked up over 30 million views worldwide.

If the idea of an Oscar-nominated actor appearing in a movie like this strikes you as somewhat strange, Fassbender has some comedy pedigree, believe it or not. If you need confirmation of this fact check out the trailer for the movie ‘Frank’ below.

There’s more good news: David Hasselhoff, who sang the original movie’s theme song, ‘True Survivor‘, has also been tapped up to make an appearance in the film.

There’s no word yet on who or what either Fassbender or the Hoff will be playing, but THR has confirmed that David Sandberg will reprise his role as the titular bad ass cop and will also produce the film under his Laser Unicorns banner. THR has also kindly provided a brief synopsis of the plot, which you can read below.

The action is set in 1985 Miami, which is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury, the greatest damn cop of all time. Kung Fury’s Thundercops are the ultimate police force assembled from across history to defeat the villainous Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. After the tragic death of a Thundercop causes the group to disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer’s quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Kung Fury must travel through space and time itself to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy and defeat evil once and for all.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith and Aaron Schmidt will produce the film under KatzSmith Productions. If those names are unfamiliar to you, they’re the trio of producers behind It, the smash hit horror movie from last year, based on Stephen King’s classic novel. That film grossed over $700 million worldwide, so it’s safe to say Kung Fury is in with a fighting chance at the box office.

If you’ve never seen Kung Fury (and what’s wrong with you?) press play on the embed below as soon as you’ve finished reading this. Happy Tuesday!
