Relive the moment Jacob Zuma resigned as president

Anybody that decided to turn in early last night is now waking up to the news that Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma has resigned as president of South Africa.

The president made the announcement late last night during a press conference. Greeting journalists in a jovial fashion, Zuma addressed the going-ons of the last week including the National Executive Committee’s decision to recall him.

“Of course, I must accept that if my Party and my compatriots wish that I be removed from office, they must exercise that right and do so in the manner prescribed by the Constitution,” said Zuma.

You can watch the former president’s address in the video below the moment he actually resigns is at the 23:55 mark.

The news was greeted by several of Zuma’s opponents with an air of glee on Twitter.

And while official statements are what we needed in this time to verify the news it was how South Africans on Twitter reacted that really showed what South African’s felt about the departure of Zuma.

So what happens now?

A new president will be elected in parliament today when the National Assembly convenes at 2PM. That vote will be overseen by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng according to EWN.

Once a new president is elected they will go on to deliver the State of the Nation Address on Friday night.
