The Karate Kid is coming back as a TV series called Cobra Kai

Proving once again that 80s nostalgia is an unstoppable force in entertainment, news has dropped that The Karate Kid is making a return as a TV series.

No, we’re not talking about the rather awful reboot back in 2010 starring Jaden Smith, a film so bad that not even Jackie Chan could save it (and that’s saying something).

No, we’re talking about the original 1984 film that gave the world Ralph Macchio and saw Happy Days veteran Pat Morita turn in what became the most iconic performance of his career as Mr Miyagi. It also brought William Zabka to audience’s attention, who played the film’s villain, the jock bully Johnny Lawrence.

Johnny looks set to be a focal point of the new series, which is named after the dojo he trained at in the first film, Cobra Kai. Have a gander at the trailer below:

Yikes! Right about now anyone who ever saw the first film in the cinemas is probably feeling very old right now. There’s not a lot to go on in the trailer aside from the fact that two members of the original cast are back and Johnny is starting up his old dojo, which fans will remember practiced karate with a rather horrible philosophical underpinning.

There’s no launch date announced for the series at present, but we can report that the show is set to premiere on YouTube Red sometime this year. In the meantime, does anyone else think that Logan Paul was cloned from the DNA of Zabka?
