Learn to speak isiXhosa – the language of Wakanda – for free online

The latest cinematic offering from Marvel – Black Panther – is causing Africans around the world to swell with pride as the strengths of the continent finally get showcased internationally.

Yes, Africa has its problems but what Black Panther seems to showcase so well is the spirit of African people.

Another highlight is the language which many South Africans will recognise as isiXhosa – just one of our 11 official languages.

Census data from 2011 reveals that there were as many as 8.15 million isiXhosa speakers in South Africa making it the second most spoken language in South Africa behind isiZulu.

The question we had was whether you could learn isiXhosa online for free and the answer is, sort of.

The website ilanguages has a few basic words for users to learn including numbers, greetings and common phrases. It’s really slick and the audio helps you learn how to say the words though learning the “clicks” the language is famous for may prove to be tricky for some.

There is also the website learn101.org which has a number of phrases and words with audio that you can use.

Next up we have Memrise. This app is available for mobile but sadly we couldn’t find any courses for isiXhosa on the app. However, if you navigate to the Memrise website and search for Xhosa you will find a host of courses including the basics of the language.

For those that are really serious about learning isiXhosa you can also take the “isiXhosa for Beginners” course on Udemy which will cost you R120. For that fee you get access to 3 hours of video lessons and eight minutes of audio.

In addition to these options one can also search the word “Xhosa” in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store to find a host of dictionaries that may help you as well.

Sikunqwenelela impumelelo!
