Can your smartphone drive a car? The Huawei Mate 10 Pro can

These days your smartphone can do a lot of things. You can speak to it to get a run down of your diary for the day. You can use it as a navigator, but can it drive a car?

The obvious answer is no – unless you have Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro.

Using the artificial intelligence capabilities of the Mate 10 Pro, Huawei used the handset to turn a Porsche Panamera into a driverless car. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer says that with this intelligence the car is not only able to see but can recognise objects as well.

“Our smartphone is already outstanding at object recognition. We wanted to see if in a short space of time we could teach it to not only drive a car, but to use its AI capabilities to see certain objects, and be taught to avoid them,” chief marketing officer of Huawei in Western Europe Andrew Garrihy said in a statement.

In just five weeks the AI was able to learn how to drive a car and recognise objects such as a ball, a bike, a cat or a dog. The firm says that the bot can also be taught to take appropriate action when it encounters a specific object.

Says Garrihy, “If our technology is intelligent enough to achieve this in just 5 weeks – what else can it make possible?”

It will be interesting to see just how far this technology can be pushed. The project – which is known as RoadReader – is currently being showcased at MWC 2018 where attendees are simultaneously testing the tech out and teaching it as they go.

So while we might not have flying cars yet, we do have a smartphone that can drive a car and that’s a pretty exciting bit of news.
