Google’s job search functionality now available in South Africa

Google is rolling out a new feature for South Africans, Kenyans and Nigerians today that will help job seekers streamline their searches.

From today if you head to Google and search for “Jobs”, you’ll be greeted by a new set of highlighted results showcasing jobs in your area.

“With unemployment in South Africa so high, this new job Search experience will help the millions of South Africans searching for new opportunities,” says country director of Google South Africa, Luke Mckend.

While the initial batch of results will be tailored to your location (provided that functionality is enabled on your mobile phone, PC or Mac) job seekers will be able to adjust the search to be more in line with what they’re looking for.

The job search function can even tell you how long the commute might be.

The search giant has partnered with Job Mail for the initial roll-out of the feature but has said that all job sites, employers and platforms are welcome to integrate with the Google platform.

Details about how to do that are available on Google’s website.

“We believe that the web allows anyone, anywhere, of any age, to grow their business, learn the skills they need to get a job, to grow in their career, become an entrepreneur or developer. This new jobs search tool will be a key driver for connecting job seekers to open opportunities, helping more people to Grow with Google,” said Mckend.

This release builds on Google’s commitment to improve economic opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Last year the firm achieved and surpassed its goal to train one million African youths in its Digital Skills for Africa program.
