Formula 1 fans will soon get a dedicated streaming platform

A few of my friends are really big Formula 1 fans and while I grew up whine of highly tuned engines in my ears every Sunday, my interest evaporated when I grew up and refused to buy a TV.

But news today has me considering following the sport once again as talk of an F1 streaming platform hits the news.

Dubbed F1 TV, the platform will launch “early in the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season” and offer subscribers a bevy of features.

This includes live streaming of races in English, German, French and Spanish. Subscribers will also be able to watch races from the FIA Formula 2 Championship, GP3 Series and Porsche Supercup.

There will also be options to re-watch races or catch-up of race weekend highlights.

“With the launch of F1 TV, we are beginning on the journey to build a cornerstone of our digital transformation. F1 TV subscription products are clearly and centrally aimed at our hardest core fans, and we are firm believers that while we are bringing a new audience to the sport, we must always remain focused on delivering products and experiences that serve the most avid F1 fans,” director of digital and new business at Formula 1 Frank Arthofer said in a statement.

F1 TV will launch in nearly 24 countries but its unclear at this stage which countries aside from most of Europe, the US and Latin America.

A monthly subscription will cost $8 – $12 depending on the market and access will be initially limited to desktop browsers at launch. Apps and support for Amazon, Apple and Android set-top boxes will be phased in at a later stage.

There will also be a cheaper F1 TV Access package which will allow subscribers to listen to radio commentary of the race and highlights of each session of a race weekend.

We’re hoping that F1 TV comes to South Africa and that the platform is ready before too long.

You can head over to the F1 website to register your interest in F1 TV.
