Google releases a lightweight version of Android for entry level phones

Here at htxt.africa we love cheap, entry-level smartphones but they have a problem.

To make entry-level smartphones cheaper manufacturers often have to use parts that don’t have the performance levels of high-end smartphones. The trouble is that the cheap smartphones still need to run Android and as you might know, Android is a resource hog.

To solve this problem Google has announced Android Oreo (Go edition).

The re imagined operating system comes with a host of redesigned apps that aim to lower the impact on performance and storage capacity while still providing the functionality of a full-fat Android operating system.

Among the redesigned apps is Google Go which promises to make searching easier, get translations faster and even conduct searches with minimal typing.

Apps designed specifically for the OS (Gmail Go, YouTube Go) will use up less storage space as well. Google says that users of Android Go will find that even with apps installed they have twice the storage capacity of those using Android Nougat.

There’s also something exciting for users of cheap smartphones – Google Assistant Go. The personal assistant will be available on smartphones with 1GB of memory for the first time ever and that’s cause for excitement.

The operating system is being launched on six devices including the Nokia 1, Alcatel 1X, ZTE Tempo Go, Lava Z50, Micromax Bharat Go, and General Mobile GM 8 Go according to The Verge.
