Fyre Festival organiser faces up to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud

One of the organisers of the now infamous Fyre Festival, Billy McFarland, has plead guilty to two counts of wire fraud.

Billed as a luxury music festival in the Bahamas, attendees arrived on the island of Great Exuma expecting luxurious tents, meals from celebrity chefs and performances from artists such as Blink 182.

Instead attendees found disaster relief tents, port-a-potties and processed cheese sandwiches.

Yesterday McFarland told judges that he underestimated the resources that would be needed to pull off an event such as the one Fyre Festival promised to be.

That underestimation and the fact that the organiser admitted to defrauding some 80 investors and a ticket broker out of $26 million means he could face up to a decade behind bars.

As reported by Bloomberg, McFarland told a US judge,”My intention and effort was directed to organizing a legitimate festival.”

“In an attempt to raise what I thought were needed funds, I lied to investors about various aspects of Fyre Media and my personal finances,” he added.

Under the organiser’s plea agreement he will face eight to ten years in prison, a fine of $300 000 and he will have to pay restitution. The exact sentence will be handed down on 21st June.

While McFarland has plead guilty to the wire fraud him and his firm Fyre Media still face more than 12 civil lawsuits and liquidation of the firm as investors and ticket buyers try to recuperate their loses.
