Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 announced

Well, this was slightly unexpected. Ubisoft’s open world third-person-shooter RPG has only been out a couple of years and already it has a sequel.

In a livestream last night, Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is in the pipeline. This comes two years to the day that the first game in this series was released.

The game’s development is being led by Massive Entertainment, but also involves Ubisoft Annecy, Redstorm, Reflections, Ubisoft Bucharest and Ubisoft Shanghai – pretty much the same crew that brought the first Division installment into the world.

This bodes well for the sequel; while The Division seemed great at launch, it was plagued by bugs and hackers shortly after its release, so here’s hoping the developers have an eye on ironing out these problems and exploits before the new game hits retail. This is an aspect that the game’s lead, Julian Gerighty, addressed in the announcement last night.

“The Division 2 will be powered by an updated version of the Snowdrop engine that enables us to realise our ambitions for the sequel, but more importantly, we’re also taking everything we learned over the past two years and applying it towards the sequel to make sure we get it right,” he said.

Details on the new game are scarce; Ubisoft didn’t even announce which platforms it’ll be available on, although we’re guessing that PC, PS4 and Xbox are pretty safe bets. In the meantime, The Division will be getting a couple of patches that upgrade two missions to Legendary difficulty and introduce more features and challenges.

If you want to know more about The Division 2, mark your calendars for this year’s E3 expo, because Ubisoft says more details will be revealed at its keynote.
